Volume I & Volume II / The art of Aiyé
Rooms people work in. Streets they call home. Thresholds they may not want to cross. Explore the illustrations as places to spend time, not pictures to hurry past.

Volume I / Invocation
Start with the doorway, the warmest light in the image, then look at the figure standing guard beside it and the tree growing out of the stone. The plate sets out the book's first question: what waits on the other side?

Follow the rain and the small lights at street level before looking upward. The composition begins with one person, then lets the surrounding city become almost too large to hold in a single glance.

The doorway is the brightest point, but the surfaces around it are full of things to notice. Trace the patterns from the steps toward the masks. The architecture makes entering feel like a decision.

Notice how small the lit figure is against the dark shapes above the houses. The crowd at the edges leans in, afraid and watching. The circle of light makes the street feel like an arena that nobody chose.

The eye moves between stone, inscription and flame. Hard material and moving light share the same space: an image of a world where the old and the extraordinary are present together.

Look up first at the six faces, each one different, arranged like a watching council. Then drop to the single kneeling figure. The composition makes an inheritance visible: many above, one below, and the light running between them.

Look down as well as up. The small amber light and its reflection give the street a human scale beneath the much larger blue presence. Darkness leaves room for the eye to keep searching.

Architecture sets the scale; the people give it meaning. Notice how the banners and repeated uprights draw a crowd into one shared space, while the silhouettes remain individual.

The warm interior and cool exterior create two different kinds of space. Pause at the threshold: there is a whole world beyond the building, but the light makes this one small place matter.

The view holds a quiet balance between water, a standing figure and the work arranged around them. Look for the small circles of light: technical detail makes the room feel used, not merely monumental.

The bodies create a diagonal through the ordered architecture. Compare the warm and cool light on opposite sides: the image lets tension travel through colour and posture before any explanation.

Begin with the face and pendant, then let the crowd come into focus. Public space surrounds a private expression. The portrait keeps a person at the centre of the spectacle.

The image is built on a split: fire on one side, electric blue on the other, and one person standing in the gap. Watch the figures at the edges who are watching him. A demonstration is also a judgement.

Follow the golden light from the sphere down across the faces around the room. The hall is full of people, but the composition keeps returning to one figure and the question of what he is looking at.

The doorway is framed like a shrine, and the tree inside it glows as if it were the light source for the whole scene. Three figures stand at the threshold with their packs at their feet, not yet through.

The fire behind him moves in a spiral that almost becomes a face. His arm carries fine glowing lines that match the pattern in the flame. Look at how close he stands to it without turning away.

The mask is divided exactly in two, and the four figures below it are divided in their own way, two by two. The small symbols floating around the mask are worth a slow look.

Take in the scale first: a city of walls, towers and banners, and a shape in the sky larger than any of it. Then find the single figure on the roof in the foreground, facing all of it alone.

The anvil is the centre of the storm. Around it the image fills with fire, blue lines of protection and people everywhere. Look for the shapes rising in the smoke at the top right.

The room is intimate even though the light will not stay still. Notice how the windows open onto a much larger night while the currents bring your eye back to one person.

This is a picture to spend time inside. Follow the people from foreground to distance, notice the banners, then look at the blue-lit structures among the stone. The scale grows out of many small lives.

The map draws the room inward while the windows open it outward. The image places private concentration against the scale of a city. Much of its tension lies in that difference.

Repeated rings draw the eye toward the centre. Let it move back toward the edges too: the watching silhouettes change how the central figure feels, even before a reader knows the scene.

The shelves create depth through repetition, but the thin golden lines interrupt that order. Look at the differences between lamplight, shadow and the illuminated traces crossing the room.

The picture concentrates light at a threshold and leaves much of the chamber unresolved. Notice the fine lines crossing the dark: the empty-looking areas are doing as much work as the doorway.

Everything in the hall points at one person: the rows of watchers, the circle on the floor, the light from the great window. Notice how far he stands from the benches, alone in the space the room has left for him.

Follow her hand into the lattice of light, then back to the fine thread running from her other hand into the instruments. The archive around her is enormous and dark; the only light is what she is reaching for.

The lines she draws cross the whole courtyard, linking stone, tree and gateway. Others sit behind her in the shade; she is the one facing outward. Look at how the pattern and the dawn arrive together.
